Hast du schon mal einen deutschen Ausdruck gehört oder gelesen und dich gefragt: Was soll das denn nun schon wieder heißen? Die Deutschen haben eine verrückte Sprache!Have you ever heard or read a German expression and wondered: What is that supposed to mean? The Germans have a crazy language!

Das ist wahr, manche Redensarten klingen sehr seltsam. Das ist uns Deutschen gar nicht so bewusst, es sei denn wir übersetzen sie wörtlich.That’s true, some phrases sound very strange. We Germans aren’t aware of that at all unless we translate them literally.

Diese schlechten Übersetzungen sind unglaublich unterhaltsam! Ich habe meinen Freunden ein paar von ihnen vorgelesen und wir lachten uns kaputt! 😀Those bad translations is incredibly entertaining! I have read some of them to my friends and we were in fits of laughter [we laughed us broken]! 😀

Deshalb habe ich nun für euch eine Kurzgeschichte geschrieben, die viele dieser seltsamen deutschen Redensarten enthält. Die wörtlichen Übersetzungen habe ich in eckigen Klammern angegeben. Dies sind teilweise absichtlich schlecht übersetzt, um es noch lustiger zu machen. 🙂Therefore I have now written a short story for you that contains many of these strange German phrases. I indicate the literal translations with brackets. These are partly intentionally badly translated in order to make it even more funny. 🙂

Und nun zur Geschichte:And now to the story:

Ein nicht ganz freundschaftliches SpielA Not Quite Friendly Game

Letztens habe mich mit meinen Sportfreunden Lukas, Mark und Alex Basketball gespielt. Wenn es um Basketball geht, kann mir niemand das Wasser reichen.Recently I’ve played basketball with my sports friends Luke, Mark and Alex. When it comes to basketball, no one can hold a candle to me [no one can hand me the water].

Ich und Lukas spielten gegen die anderen beiden. Gegen Ende des Spiels waren wir im Gleichstand. „Jetzt geht’s um die Wurst. Dieses Spiel werden wir gewinnen!“, rief ich Lukas zu.Me and Luke played against the other two. Towards the end of the game we tied. “It’s now or never. [Now it’s all about the sausage.] We will win this game!”, I called out to Luke.

Mark, der manchmal ein bisschen komisch ist, meinte dazu „Da bist du aber ganz schön auf dem Holzweg! Ich sehe schwarz für euch.“Mark, who is a bit funny sometimes, commented “There you are quite on the wrong track [on the woodway]! I’d be pessimistic. [I see black for you.]”

Ich hatte den Ball, war aber noch weit vom Korb entfernt. Mark wollte mich dazu bringen, den Ball zu verlieren und meinte, versuch doch mal, von dort den Korb zu treffen.I had the ball, but was still far from the basket. Mark wanted to get me to lose the ball and said I should try to take the basket from there.

Mein Hammer-ErfolgMy Awesome [Hammer] Success

„Den Teufel werde ich tun!“, erwiderte ich. „Du bist so ein Angsthase…“, ärgerte mich Mark.“Like hell I’m going to do that! [The devil will I do!]”, I replied. “You’re such a coward [fear-rabbit]…”, Mark teased me.

Das konnte ich nicht auf mir sitzen lassen! Ich warf den Ball und er flog im hohen Bogen auf den Korb zu. „Das geht in die Hose,“ rief Mark noch.I couldn’t stand for that [let it sit on me]! I threw the ball and it flew toward the basket in a high arc. “That will be be a complete flop [That goes in the pants],” said Mark at that.

Aber der Ball ging tatsächlich in den Korb! „Holla, die Waldfee!“, rief Lukas. Ich rief: „Wie geil ist das denn!? Das macht mir keiner so leicht nach!“But the ball actually went in the basket! “Well, I never! [Holla, the forest fairy!]”, called Lukas. I shouted, “How cool is that!? [How horny is that then!?] Match that if you can! / That’s not something that can be copied easily! [That makes me nobody so quickly after!]”

„Gib nicht so an,“ meinte Alex. „Warum nicht? Ich bin halt besser als ihr alle!“ Okay, ich weiß — das war nicht wirklich nett von mir.“Don’t boast like that [Give not so on],” Alex said. “Why? I’m just [stop] better than all of you!” OK, I know — that was not very nice of me.

• nachmachen: wiederholen, was jemand zuvor getan hatnachmachen [to after-make]: repeat what someone has done before
• angeben: sich wichtiger erscheinen lassen als man ist; prahlenangeben [to on-give]: make yourself appear more important than you are; brag

Der Streit eskaliertThe Quarrel Escalates

Daraufhin explodierte Mark,Then Mark exploded,

• „Mensch, Marco!“Jeepers creepers! / Gosh, Marco! [Human, Marco!]
• Himmel, Arsch und Zwirn!For God’s sake! [Heaven, ass and thread!]
• Du gehst mir tierisch auf den Keks!You get incredibly on my nerves! [You walk me animally on the cookie!]
• Ich halt’s im Kopf nicht aus!“I can’t bear it! [I hold it in head not out!]”

Da standen mir die Haare zu Berge. Wie redet der denn mit mir?Hearing that, my hair stood on end [stood me the hairs to mountains]. How is he talking to me?

Die Gedanken, die mir durch den Kopf gingen, waren: „Ich glaub mein Schwein pfeift! Mein lieber Herr Gesangsverein!“The thoughts that went through my head were, “I think I’m going off my rocker! [I think my pig whistles!] My goodness! [My lovely mister singing club!]”

Ich meinte zu ihm: „Komm mal klar! Reiß dich zusammen!“I said to him: “Deal with it! [Come times clear!] Snap out of it! / Pull yourself together! [Rip yourself together!]”

Tja, mit Mark ist manchmal nicht gut Kirschen essen.Well, Mark is sometimes not an easy man to deal with [with Mark is sometimes not good cherry-eating].

Manchmal denke ich echt, er hat einen Sprung in der Schüssel, er hat einfach nicht mehr alle Tassen im Schrank.Sometimes I really think he is cracked / crazy [has a jump / crack in the dish], he just has a screw loose [not anymore every cup in the cupboard].

Die VersöhnungThe Reconciliation

Die ganze Situation hat mich so aufgeregt, ich hatte fast einen Kreislaufzusammenbruch. Ich dachte mir, „Ich krieg die Krise! Mir reicht es.“The whole situation got me so agitated I almost had a circulatory collapse [circle-run-together-break]. I thought to myself, “I’m losing it! [I get the crisis!] I’ve had enough. [Me reaches it.]”

Ich ging einfach nach Hause. Von mir aus kann er mich mal!I just went home. A far as I’m concerned, he can get stuffed / he can bit me [can he me times / sometime]!

Später haben wir nochmal darüber geredet. Wir haben uns bei einander entschuldigt, worauf mir ein Stein vom Herzen fiel. Jetzt ist alles wieder im grünen Bereich.Later, we talked about it again. We have apologized to the other, which took a load off my mind [at which me a stone from the heart fell]. Now everything is fine [back in the green zone].
