Dieser Artikel beschreibt meine Vorstellung von Itomis Geschichte. Es wird sich wohl so oder so ähnlich abgespielt haben.This article describes my mental image of Itomi’s story. It could have happened like this or similarly.

Wie die kleine Itomi ihr Heimatland verließHow Little Itomi Left Her Home Country

Itomi war nur ein vier Jahre altes Mädchen, als ihre Eltern sie 1974 in die USA mitnahmen. Ihr Vater war Angestellter einer japanischen Firma, die auch Geschäfte in den Vereinigten Staaten hatte.Itomi was just a four year old girl, when her parents took her along to the USA in 1974. Her father was a worker at a Japanese Company, which was also doing business in the United States.

So zog die Familie los in dieses fremde Land. Itomi verabschiedete sich von ihren Freunden aus dem Kindergarten.So the family moved to this strange country. Itomi said goodbye to all her friends from kindergarten.

Ihre Eltern haben ihr gesagt, dass sie in einem Jahr eingeschult wird. Ob sie dann wieder in Japan sein wird?Her parents had told her that she will be enrolled for school in one year. Would she be back in Japan by then?

Der Flug war sehr lang, sodass die Familie nachts in New York ankam. Die Gebäude waren riesig und Itomi staunte, wie belebt die Straßen sind.The flight was very long, so that the family arrived in New York at night. The buildings were gigantic and Itomi marveled at how busy the streets were.

Itomi und ihre Eltern zogen in ein großes Etagenhaus. In der ersten Nacht war es schwer für Itomi, einzuschlafen, da sie so aufgeregt war.Itomi and her parents moved into a big apartment building. During the first night, it was difficult for Itomi to sleep, as she was so excited.

Einer ihrer Nachbarn war ein kauziger Mann. Obwohl er nicht sehr alt war, hatte er schon Geheimratsecken.One of her neighbors was an odd man. Even though he was not very old, he was already going bald at the temples.

Er war aber immer sehr gut gelaunt und freundlich. Sie hatte ihn einmal mit ihren Eltern reden sehen, und dann hatte der Mann ihre Hand geschüttelt.But he was always very cheerful and friendly. He once say him talking with her parents, and then the man had shaken her hand.

Eines Tages spielte sie auf dem Innenhof mit einem Ball. Ihre Familie wohnte zum Glück im ersten Stock, sodass die Mutter den Innenhof von der Küche aus immer gut im Blick hatte. So konnte Itomi immer draußen spielen, während ihre Mutter kochte.One day she played in the courtyard with a ball. Luckily, her family lived on the first florr, so that her mother had a good view of the courtyard from the kitchen. That’s why Itomi always could play outside while her mother cooked a meal.

Itomis Nachbar kam vorbei, als Itomi gerade den Ball gegen eine Wand schoss. Der Ball prallte ungünstig ab und rollte zu ihrem Nachbar, welcher ihn mit dem Fuß stoppte.Itomi’s neighbor was passing by, as Itomi was just kicking the ball against a wall. The ball bounced off in an awkward way and rolled to her neighbor, who stopped it with his foot.

Sie wusste es nicht, aber ihr Nachbar arbeitete als Direktor für Englisch als Zweitsprache an der Universität am Queens College, City University of New York.She did not know it , but her neighbor was working as director of English as a second language at Queens College, City University of New York.

Itomis erste EnglischstundeItomi’s First English Lesson

Der Mann lächelte sie an und sagte auf Englisch, “Itomi, sprich mit mir. Sag’ guten Morgen, sage hi!”.The man smiled at her and said in English, “Itomi, talk to me. Say good morning, say hi!”

Itomi war ein bisschen verunsichert. Es war das erste Mal, das jemand sie auf Englisch angesprochen hat.Itomi was a little anxious. It was the first time that someone had spoken to her in English.

Sie hatte “guten Morgen” und “hi” schon mal gehört, aber die anderen Worte verstand sie nicht. Was wollte der Mann von ihr?She had heard “good morning” and “hi” before, but she did not understand the other words. What did the man want from her?

Der Mann zeigte auf den Ball und sagte, “Itomi, sage Ball!”.The man pointed to the ball and said, “Itomi, say ball!”

Fasziniert schaute sie ihn an. “Sag ‘B’”, sagte er, “Schau auf meine Lippen.”Fascinated, she looked at him. “Say ‘B’”, said he, “Look at my lips.”

Jetzt zeigte der Mann auf seine Lippen. Er sah ein bisschen frustriert aus.Now the man pointed to his lips. He looked a little frustrated.

Der Mann hob den Ball auf und meinte, “Ich werde dir den Ball nicht geben, bis du ‘Ball’ sagst.” Itomi spürte, dass der Mann ihr den Ball vorenthalten wollte.The man picked up the ball and said, “I won’t give you the ball until you say ball.” Itomi sensed that the man wanted to withhold the ball from her.

Sie gab einen quengelnden Laut von sich und streckte die Arme nach dem Ball aus.She made a grouching noice and extended her arms toward the ball.

Das tat dem Mann Leid, worauf er ihr sofort ihren Ball wiedergab. Er setzte sich auf den Boden und schaute nachdenklich drein.That made the man feel sorry, whereupon he immediately gave her back her ball. He sat down on the floor and looked thoughtful.

Wie Itomi schließlich Englisch lernteHow Itomi Finally Learned English

Itomi spielte weiter mit ihrem Ball. Nachdem der Mann eine Weile nachdenklich da gesessen hatte, entschied er sich, bei ihrem Spiel mitzumachen.Itomi continued playing with the ball. After the man sat there thinking for a while, he decided to participate in her play.

Der Ball rollte erneut zu ihm. “Entschuldigung, Itomi! Ich werde dir nicht mehr sagen, was du tun sollst.” Er schoss den Ball zu ihr: “Bitte sehr!”The ball rolled to him again. “I’m sorry, Itomi! I won’t tell you any more what to do.” He kicked the ball to her: “Here you go!”

Das gefiel Itomi viel besser! Jetzt konnte sie entscheiden, wie sie zusammen spielen. Es machte Spaß, mit diesem freundlichen Mann zu spielen.That pleased Itomi much more! Now she could decide, how they play together. It was fun to play with this friendly man.

Oft machte er faxen mit dem Ball. Einmal versuchten sie, den Ball so hoch wie möglich zu werfen. Dabei warf der Mann den Ball aus Versehen über einen Zaun. “Warte, ich mache das. Ich hole den Ball.”Often he acted the fool with the ball. One time they tried to throw the ball as high as possible. In doing so, the man threw the ball over a fence by mistake. “Wait, I’ll take care of it. I’ll get the ball.”

Der Mann redete die ganze Zeit in seiner Sprache, Englisch. Itomi verstand natürlich kein Englisch, aber ihr war oft aus dem Zusammenhang klar, was der Mann meinte.The entire time the man talked in his langauge, English. Of course Itomi did not understand English, but it was often clear to her from the context, what the man meant.

Ein langer Weg zum ErfolgA Long Way To Success

Manchmal versuchte der Mann immer noch, sie zum Sprechen zu bringen. Aber das frustrierte sie immer sehr.Sometimes the man still tried to get her to talk. But that always frustrated her.

Sie wollte spielen! Sie wollte einen Freund, einen Spielpartner, und nicht einen weiteren Erwachsenen, der ihr sagt, was sie tun soll.She wanted to play! She wanted a friend, a playmate, and not another adult who told her what to do.

So ging das mehrere Wochen lang. Dann mehrere Monate. In der Zwischenzeit befreundete sie noch mehr Menschen aus der Nachbarschaft.It went like that vor many weeks. Then many months. In the meantime she befriended still more people from the neighborhood.

Sie sprach nur ein einziges Mal Englisch. Das war, als ein anderes Kind sie ärgern wollte. “Lass mich alleine!”, sagte sie zu dem Jungen.She only spoke one single time in English. That was the time when another child wanted to tease her. “Leave me alone!”, she said to the boy.

Sie hatte keine Ahnung, was das heißt. Aber sie hat einmal beobachtet, dass ein Kind es gesagt hat, welches seine Ruhe wollte.She had no clue what that meant. But she had once witnessed a child saying it who wanted to be left alone.

Der Junge ließ sie auch prompt in Ruhe. Sie fühlte sich stolz, diese neue Sprache erfolgreich eingesetzt zu haben.The boy let her be right away as well. She felt proud to have used this new language successfully.

Fünf Monate, nachdem sie ihren Nachbarn kennen gelernt hatte, fing sie an, Englisch zu sprechen. Am Anfang waren es nur ein paar Worte. Aber nach kurzer Zeit sprudelte es nur so aus sie heraus.Five months after she met her neighbor, she startet to speak English. In the beginning, it was only a couple of words. But after a short time, it just bubbled over.

Als sie mit ihrer Familie wieder zurück nach Japan flog, konnte sie fast so gut sprechen wie die amerikanischen Kinder.At the time her family flew back to Japan, she could speak almost as well as the American children.

Was wir aus dieser Geschichte lernen könnenWhat We Can Learn From This Story

Itomis Nachbar war niemand anderes als Professor Krashen, ein berühmter Linguist und Bildungsforscher.Itomis neighbor was none other than Professor Krashen, a famous linguist and educational researcher.

Heutzutage würde Professor Krashen manche Dinge anders machen. Die Lehren, die er aus seiner Erfahrung mit Itomi gezogen hat, sind die folgenden:Nowadays Professor Krashen would do some things differently. The lessons he learned from his experience with Itomi, are the following:

„[Die Art, wie Itomi Englisch gelernt hat,] sah wie Erstspracherwerb aus. Derselbe Prozess, den auch unsere Kinder durchgemacht haben: ein Wort, zwei Wörter, allmählich immer komplexer.”“[The way Itomi learned English] looked a lot like first language acquisition. The same process our children went through: one word, two words, gradually getting more complicated.”
„Es kam schnell. Als Itomi und ihre Familie am Jahresende zurück nach Japan gingen, näherte sich ihr Englisch dem an, wie die anderen Kinder in der Nachbarschaft redeten.”“It came quickly. By the time Itomi and her family went back to Japan at the end of the year, her English was closing in on the way the other children in the neighborhood were talking.”
„Als sie anfing, zu sprechen, war es nicht der Anfang ihres Spracherwerbs. Es war das Ergebnis all des verständlichen Materials, das sie während der fünf Monate bekommen hat.”“When she started to speak it was not the beginning of her language acquisition. It was the result of all the comprehensible input she had gotten over those five months.”
