Die Erfahrung an der High School hat mir nicht nur die Möglichkeit gegeben, mich neu auszuprobieren (d.h. mich stark zu verändern), sondern auch, in die englische Sprache einzutauchen.The experience in high school has given me not only the opportunity to try myself out (that is, to change myself much), but also to immerse myself in the English language.

Was heißt es, in eine Sprache einzutauchen? Was bedeutet Immersion?What does it mean to immerse yourself in a language? What does immersion mean?

Nun, es bedeutet, eine Sprache so viel wie möglich zu hören und zu lesen. Es bedeutet, sich mit Muttersprachlern zu unterhalten.Well, it means listening to a language and reading it as much as possible. It means talking to native speakers.

Manche Leute haben die Möglichkeit, in das Land der Zielsprache zu reisen, manche nicht.Some people have the opportunity to travel to the country of the target language, some do not.

Egal, welche Materialien du benutzt, je mehr du liest und je mehr du hörst, desto besser wirst du Deutsch schreiben beziehungsweise sprechen können.No matter what materials you use, the more you read and the more you listen to, the better you will be able to write or speak German, respectively.

Nun, ich weiß, dass ein Baby am Anfang gar nichts versteht. Als Erwachsene haben wir zum Glück die Möglichkeit, uns ein grundlegendes Vokabular anzueignen, bevor wir mit der Immersion beginnen.Well, I know that a baby does not understand anything at first. As adults, we are fortunate enough to be able to adopt a basic vocabulary before we begin the process of immersion.

Leider können wir auch nicht anders: Wenn wir zu früh mit der Immersion anfangen, sind wir leider nicht so gut wie Babies darin, eine Sprache zu erwerben.Unfortunately, we can not do otherwise: If we start too early with the immersion, we are unfortunately not as good as babies in acquiring a language.

Wie kannst du also einfach Deutsch lernen? Nun, du folgst den folgenden Schritten:So how can you learn German? Well, follow these steps:

1. Du eignest dir ein grundlegendes Vokabular an. (Du lernst simple Wörter auswendig.)You learn basic vocabulary. (You learn simple words by heart.)
2. Dann fängst du an, deutsche Texte zu lesen und Deutsch zu hören. Du brauchst dir nicht allzu viele Gedanken darüber zu machen, selber zu sprechen. Ein Baby braucht auch sehr lange, bis es selber spricht.Then you start reading German texts and listening to German. You do not have to worry too much about talking yourself. A baby also takes a long time until it speaks.
3. Erst, wenn du dich bereit dazu fühlst, fängst du an zu sprechen. Setze dich nicht unter Druck!Only when you feel ready, you start talking. Do not put yourself under pressure!
4. Je mehr deutsche Texte du liest, je mehr Deutsch du hörst, desto besser wirst du selber schreiben und sprechen. Höre also nicht auf, jeden Tag Zeit zu investieren und die Sprache zu erwerben.The more German texts you read, the more German you listen to, the better you will write and speak yourself. Do not stop investing time and to acquire the language every day.

Es gibt viele Ressourcen, die dir dabei helfen. Am Anfang helfen dir Apps wie Memrise und Duolingo.There are many resources to help you. In the beginning, you can use apps like Memrise and Duolingo.

Später verstehst du komplizierteres Material. Wenn du diesen Podcast verstehst, bist du bestimmt kein absoluter Anfänger mehr.Later you will understand more complicated material. If you understand this podcast, you’re no longer an absolute beginner.

Um es noch einmal zusammenzufassen: Lerne die wichtigsten Vokabeln auswendig. Fange dann an, deutsche Texte zu lesen und Deutsch zu hören, sobald du mehr als die Hälfte verstehst.To sum it up again: Learn the most important vocabulary by heart. Start by reading German texts and listening to German as soon as you understand more than half.

Mache dir nicht allzu viele Gedanken über die Grammatik oder darüber, selber zu sprechen.Do not worry too much about the grammar or about talking yourself.

Und so erwirbst auch du die deutsche Sprache ganz einfach, wie ein Baby!And that’s how you too can easily acquire the German language, like a baby!
