Dies ist meine Rezension der App FlashAcademy von Learning Labs. Es ist eine sehr innovative Sprachlern-App für Anfänger und teilweise auch Fort­ge­schrit­te­ne.This is my review of the app FlashAcademy by Learning Labs. It is a very innovative language learning app for beginners and partly also for advanced learners.

Sei nicht so wie ich…Do Not Be Like Me…

Oft nehmen wir uns viele Dinge vor, aber finden einfach nicht die Zeit dafür. So ging es auch mir, als mich ein Mitarbeiter von FlashAcademy vor 9 Monaten (!) fragte, ob ich nicht FlashAcademy rezensieren möchte.Often we intend to do a lot of things, but do not find the time for it. So it was also for me when a member of FlashAcademy asked me 9 months ago (!) if I would like to review FlashAcademy.

But as I always plan to do more things than I can manage, I procrastinated for such a long time that in the meantime a baby could have grown in a mother’s womb.

Was ich toll findeWhat I like

Zuerst dachte ich, es handele sich um eine simple App, bei der ich hauptsächlich Karteikarten (Engl. flashcards) auswendig lerne. Ganz und gar nicht!At first, I thought it was a simple app where I mainly learn flashcards from memory. Not at all!

Die App hat viele Funktionen und kann einen ganz schön auf Trab halten. Ich denke, diese App sollte wesentlich bekannter sein!The app has many features and can be hard to keep up with. I think this app should be much better known!

Häufige WiederholungFrequent Repetition

Am Anfang einer Lektion werden neue Wörter mit Übersetzung vorgestellt. Man kann sich anhören, wie sie ausgesprochen werden.At the beginning of a lesson, new words are presented with translation. You can listen to how they are pronounced.

Man kann sogar Videos von Muttersprachlern sehen, die die Wörter sagen, was der Lernerfahrung eine persönliche Note gibt.You can even see videos of native speakers who speak the words, giving the learning expierence a personal touch.

Die Wörter werden auf verschiedene Weise gelehrt. Zuerst wird das Wort mit Übersetzung vorgestellt, dann muss man die richtige Übersetzung aus einer Liste von Optionen wählen. Zwischendurch wird der Begriff immer und immer wieder vorgesprochen. Diese Wiederholung hilft enorm, das Wort zu lernen. Im Gegensatz zu Duolingo hört man die Sprache bei jeder einzelnen Übung.The words are taught in different ways. First the word with translation is presented, then you must choose the correct translation from a list of options. In between, the term is said out loud over and over again. This repetition greatly helps to learn the word. Unlike Duolingo, you can hear the language in each exercise.

Außerdem gibt es ein Rätsel, bei dem man das richtige Symbol wählen muss. So assoziiert man das deutsche Wort nicht nur mit der Übersetzung, sondern auch mit einem Bild, das den Gegenstand darstellt.There is also a puzzle where you have to choose the right symbol. Thus, the German word is associated not only with the translation, but also with an icon that represents the item.

Tipps zwischendurchTips In Between

Mir gefielen die Grammatiktipps, die zwischen den Lektionen auftauchten. Auch für Leute, die Grammatik nicht so sehr mögen, ist es eine gute Dosis.I liked the grammatical hints that appeared between the lessons. Also for people who do not like grammar as much, it is a good dose.

In den Tipps wurden unter anderem auch die deutschen Umlaute und die Artikel erklärt. Es gibt viele Konzepte in der deutschen Sprache, die den Deutschlerner am Anfang verwirren. Deswegen fand ich es toll, dass diese zwischendurch erklärt werden.In the tips, the German umlauts and the articles were explained. There are many concepts in the German language that confuse the German learner in the beginning. That’s why I liked that those were explained in between.

Außerdem werden Aspekte der deutschen Kultur erläutert und Redewendungen vorgestellt.In addition, aspects of German culture are explained and figures of speech are presented.

Beim Laden der Dateien werden dir auch kurze, lustige Fakten genannt – wie Beispiel, dass Gummibärchen von einem Deutschen erfunden wurde. Wer hätt’s gewusst?When loading the files, you are also shown short, fun facts – for example, that gummy bears were invented by a German. Who would’ve known?

WortspieleWord Games

Die Gamification ist stark in dieser hier!The Gamification is strong in this one!

Besonders die Wortspiele haben mich umgehauen! Selbst bei meiner Muttersprache musste ich mich konzentrieren, um mithalten zu können. Die Schnelligkeit der Spiele ist allerdings Teil des Spaßes!Especially the word games have blown me off! Even in my native language, I had to concentrate to be able to keep up. The speed of the games is part of the fun!

Es gibt noch viele weitere Funktionen, aber ich möchte diese Rezension nicht zu lang machen.There are many more features, but I do not want to make this review too long.

Eine beeindruckende Funktion ist folgende: Du machst ein Bild von einem Gegenstand und die App findet heraus, was für ein Gegenstand es ist und übersetzt das Wort! Wow!An impressive feature is the following: You take a picture of an object and the app finds out what an object it is and translates the word! Wow!

(Sobald der Reiz des Neuen vorbei ist, merkt man jedoch, dass es effizienter ist, das Wort einfach in einen Übersetzer einzutippen.)(As soon as the novelty wears off, however, you realize that it is more efficient to type the word into a translator.)

Was nicht so toll istWhat is not so great

Mir nichts besonders negativ aufgefallen und ich werde die App weiter für mein Italienisch nutzen.I noticed nothing particularly negative and I will continue to use the app for my Italian.

WartezeitenWaiting Times

Wenn man eine neue Lektion ausprobiert, muss sie erst heruntergeladen werden. Das ist einerseits toll, da FlashAcademy nicht meinen Speicher unnötig füllt, andererseits muss man schon manchmal eine Minute warten, bis es losgeht.If you try a new lesson, you have to download it first. This is great on the one hand, since FlashAcademy does not fill my memory unnecessarily, on the other hand you have to wait sometimes a minute until you can get startet.

Man kann leider währenddessen nichts anderes in der App machen und selbst angefangene Lektionen müssen neu heruntergeladen werden.Unfortunately, you cannot do anything else in the app in the meantime, and even already started lessons have to be re-downloaded.

Es wäre toll gewesen, in den Einstellungen zwischen permanenten Download und sparsamer Nutzung des Speichers wählen zu können.It would have been great to be able to choose in the settings between permanent download and economical use of the memory.

Was andere bemängelnWhat Others Complain About

Eine Rezensentin meinte, die Tonaufnahmen wären abrupt oder herablassend, aber ich hatte nicht den Eindruck.One reviewer said the sound recordings were abrupt or arrogant, but I did not get that impression.

Die Leute, die schwer neue Gewohnheiten formen, müssen leider ohne eine tägliche Erinnerung von der App auskommen.People who don’t form new habits easily unfortunately have to manage without a daily reminder from the app.

Ein anderer Rezensent hat einen Punkt, wenn er meint, manche Funktionen sind zu simpel. Ich für meinen Teil hätte mir manchmal längere Sätze gewünscht.Another reviewer has a point when he thinks some functions are too simple. For my part, I would have liked longer sentences.

Der PreisThe Price

Für 3,83€ bis 8,99€ im Monat schaltet man alle Funktionen frei. Dies ist nicht schlimm, wenn man ernsthaft Deutsch lernen möchte und meiner Meinung nach völlig gerechtfertigt – besonders, da man mit der App auch Französisch, Spanisch und Italienisch lernen kann (mehr in Arbeit).For 3.83€ to 8.99€ per month, all functions are enabled. This is not a bad thing if you want to learn German seriously and in my opinion completely justified – especially as you can also learn French, Spanish and Italian with the app (more in the works).

Für den gelegentlichen Lerner ist eine kostenlose App aber vielleicht besser geeignet.But for the casual learner a free app is perhaps better suited.

Eine WarnungA Note of Caution

Das Einzige, vor dem ich warnen möchte, ist, das Ziel nicht zu vergessen: das Erwerben der Sprache.The only thing I want to warn is not to forget the goal: the acquisition of the language.

Eine App kann dir helfen, eine Sprache zu erwerben. Indem du Übersetzungen auswendig lernst, machst du Deutschlernmaterial verständlicher für dich. Du kannst deutsche Texte und gesprochene Inhalte besser verstehen.An app can help you acquire a language. By memorizing translations, you make German learning material more understandable to you. You can better understand German texts and spoken content.

Ab einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt musst du allerdings anfangen, längere Texte zu lesen, YouTube-Videos zu schauen, Filme zu schauen oder dich mit Muttersprachlern zu unterhalten.From a certain point in time, however, you need to start reading longer texts, watch YouTube videos, watch movies or talk to native speakers.

Ich selber habe mich einmal zu sehr auf meine Punkte und meine ungebrochene Serie an Übungstagen in einer App konzentriert und ganz vergessen, dass ich die Sprache ja irgendwann fließend sprechen möchte!I myself once focused too much on my points and my unbroken streak of practice days in an app and completely forgot that I would actually like to speak the language fluently!

Mir gefällt die App sehr. Als ich angefangen habe, diese Rezension zu schreiben, fiel es mir erst schwer, negative Aspekte zu finden, so überwältigt war ich von den positiven. Aber am Ende konnte ich doch ein bisschen “mäkeln”. 😉I like the app very much. When I started writing this review, it was hard for me to find negative aspects, I was so overwhelmed by the positive ones. But in the end I was able to criticize a little. 😉

In der kostenlosen Version ist die App stark eingeschränkt. Je nach Plan muss man 3,83€ bis 8,99€ im Monat investieren, um die App vollständig nutzen zu können. Dies ist meiner Meinung nach ein sehr akzeptabler Preis für ernsthafte Deutschlerner.In the free version, the app is severely restricted. Depending on the plan you have to invest 3.83 € to 8.99 € per month to use the app fully. This is, in my opinion, a very acceptable price for serious German learners.

Mein Fazit ist deshalb: Ich liebe diese App und kann sie insgesamt empfehlen. Probiere sie aus, spiele die Wortspiele und entscheide selber, ob du die App weiter nutzen willst und ob sie dein Geld wert ist.My conclusion is therefore: I love this app and can recommend it on the whole. Try it out, play the word games and decide for yourself whether you want to continue to use the app and if it’s worth your money.
