Während ich meinen letzten Artikel über Empathie geschrieben habe, erinnerte ich mich daran, dass Robin Williams einmal mit einem Gorilla gesprochen hat!While I wrote my last article about empathy, I remembered that Robin Williams talked with a gorilla once!

Ich habe mir gedacht: Wenn Robin Williams mit einem Gorilla kommunizieren konnte, warum tun wir uns dann manchmal so schwer, mit unseren Mitmenschen zu kommunizieren?I thought to myself: If Robin Williams can communicate with a gorilla, why do we sometimes struggle to communicate with other people?

Wer ist Koko?Who Is Koko?

Koko war nur ein kleines, unterernährtes Gorillababy, als sie von Penny Patterson quasi adoptiert wurde.Koko was just a small, undernourished gorilla baby when she was effectively adopted by Penny Patterson.

Penny, damals eine Psychologiestudentin, fing an, Koko die Gebärdensprache beizubringen.Penny, at that time a psychology student, started to teach Koko sign language.

Nach nur zwei Wochen verwendete Koko eine Handvoll Zeichen, um ihre grundlegenden Bedürfnisse mitzuteilen. Mittlerweile, über 40 Jahre später, beherrscht sie ungefähr 1.000 Zeichen der Amerikanischen Gebärdensprache und versteht ca. 2.000 englische Wörter.After just two weeks Koko used a handful of signs to communicate her basic needs. By now, over 40 years later, she mastered about 1,000 signs of the American sign language and understands approximately 2,000 English words.

Koko hat zudem ein höheres Bewusstsein als andere Gorillas demonstriert; zum Beispiel kann sie sich im Spiegel erkennen. Man kann sogar mit ihr über den Tod reden, was natürlich kein leichtes Thema ist.Additionally, Koko has demonstrated a higher consciousness than other gorillas; for example, she can recognize herself in a mirror. You can even talk to her about death, which of course it not a easy topic.

Koko trifft Robin WilliamsKoko Meets Robin Williams

2001 wurde Robin Williams eingeladen, sich mit Koko zu treffen. Niemand wusste, wie das Treffen verlaufen würde, aber es hat auf beide einen großen Eindruck hinterlassen.2001 Robin Williams was invited to meet Koko. Nobody knew how the encounter would go, but it has left a great impression on both.

Natürlich kann man mit einem Gorilla nicht so komplexe Themen besprechen wie mit einem Menschen, aber die beiden haben sich gut genug verstanden, um einen tollen Tag miteinander zu verbringen.Of course you cannot discuss with a gorilla such complex topics like you would with a human, but the two have understood each other well enough to have a great day together.

Koko schnappte sich Robins Brille, setzte sie auf und schaute aus dem Fenster. Robin meinte dazu später, “und sie sah toll aus, die Brille stand ihr gut!”Koko snatched Robins glasses, put them on and looked out the window. Robin said about that later, “and she looked great, the glasses actually looked very nice on her!”

Dann wollte Koko von Robin gekitzelt werden, was er prompt tat. Koko kitzelte zurück und fand dabei seine Brieftasche, die ihre Neugier weckte. Sie fand seinen Ausweis und tatsächlich: Es ist der echte Robin Williams!Then Koko wanted to be tickled by Robin, which he promptly did. Koko tickled back and thereby found his wallet, which aroused her curiosity. She found his ID and sure enough: It’s the real Robin Williams!

Die große Bedeutung dieses TreffensThe Great Importance of This Encounter

Es war für beide ein sehr besonderes Treffen. Koko hatte seit 6 Monaten nicht mehr gelacht, da ihr Gorillagefährte gestorben war. Mit Robin konnte sie wieder lachen.It was a very special encounter for them both. Koko had not laughed for 6 months since her gorilla companion had died. With Robin she could laugh again.

Auch Robin war sehr von dem Zusammentreffen gerührt. Auf der Bühne scheint er immer sehr zappelig, aber in der Gesellschaft des Gorillas war er sehr ruhig, sensibel und empathisch – und natürlich lustig, wie immer.Robin was very touched as well by the encounter. On stage he always seems very fidgety, but in the company of the gorilla he was very calm, sensitive and empathetic – and of course, funny as always.

Ich finde es beeindruckend, wie ein einziges Treffen auf zwei Wesen eine so große Wirkung haben kann. Sie sind beide auf den anderen eingegangen und hatten Spaß miteinander.I think it’s amazing how a single encounter of two beings can have such a great impact. They both responded to each other and had fun together.

Alles ist möglich!Everything Is Possible!

Ich habe die Kommunikation zwischen einem Menschen und einem Gorilla beschrieben. Wenn das möglich ist, dann ist es auch für dich möglich, Deutsch zu lernen.I have described the communication between a human and a gorilla. If that is possible, then it is also possible for you to learn German.

Wie ist es ihnen gelungen, miteinander zu kommunizieren und dabei Spaß zu haben?How did they manage to communicate with each other and to have fun at the same time?

• Sie waren bereit, auf die Wünsche des anderen einzugehen (Robin kitzelte Koko).They were willing to respond to the wishes of the other (Robin tickled Koko).
• Sie waren sehr, sehr neugierig auf den anderen (Koko untersuchte Robins Brille und Brieftasche).They were very, very curious about the other (Koko examined Robins glasses and wallet).
• Sie schenkten dem anderen Ruhe, Vertrauen und Lachen.They gave the other calm, confidence and laughter.
