Vorfreude ist eines dieser Wörter, die die deutsche Sprache so toll machen.Anticipation is one of those words that make the German language so great.

Wenn man Vorfreude hat, dann ist man glücklich, weil man ein bestimmtes Ereignis kaum erwarten kann.If you have pleasant anticipation, you’re happy because you cannot wait for a certain event.

Es ist ein sehr positives Wort. Nicht so wie Schadenfreude! Schadenfreude ist die „Freude“ über das Leid (über die Schmerzen) eines anderen Menschen.It is a very positive word. Not like Schadenfreude! Schadenfreude is the “pleasure” about the suffering (about the pain) of another person.

Und genau dieses Wort wurde ins Englische exportiert. Schadenfreude ist ein sehr negatives Wort, finde ich, aber Vorfreude ist viel besser.And just that word was exported into English. Schadenfreude is a very negative word, I think, but pleasant anticipation is much better.

Wenn Kinder sich auf Weihnachten freuen, dann haben sie Vorfreude. Es gibt sogar ein Lied darüber: „Vorfreude, schönste Freude. Freude im Advent.“When children look forward to Christmas, then they have pleasant anticipation. There’s even a song about it: “Vorfreude is the greatest joy. Joy in the Advent.”

Erinnerst du dich, wie es damals war, als du als Kind auf Weihnachten oder auf deinen Geburtstag gewartet hast? Als es endlich soweit war und du Geschenke bekommen hast, hast du dich sehr gefreut.Do you remember how it was as a child when you were waiting for Christmas or for your birthday? Aber vorher, bevor du die Geschenke bekommen hast, hast du dich auch schon gefreut. Diese Vorfreude hat das Ereignis viel, viel besser gemacht.But beforehand, before you got the gifts, you were already delighted. This pleasant anticipation has much made the event much better.

Ich denke, Vorfreude kann uns auch anspornen (motivieren), unsere Ziele zu verfolgen.I think anticipation can also spur (motivate) us to pursue our goals.

Denke nur darüber nach, wie toll es sein wird, wenn du fließend Deutsch sprechen kannst. Stell dir vor, wie du in Deutschland bist und dich mit den Leuten dort unterhältst.Just think about how great it will be if you can speak German fluently. Imagine yourself being in Germany and talking with the people there.
