Ist es wahr? Kann man wirklich keine Schritte überspringen?Is it true? Are you really unable to skip any steps?

Ja, im gewissen Sinne schon. Du kannst auf jeden Fall nicht das Üben überspringen. Du musst regelmäßig Zeit in die Sprache investieren, viel hören oder viel lesen – sonst wirst du nicht besser!Yes, in a sense it’s true. You cannot skip practicing in any case. You must regularly invest time in the language, listening or reading much – or you will not improve!

Im Titel der Episode spreche ich vom Lernen, da dieses Verb geläufiger ist (weil dieses Verb häufiger benutzt wird). Aber eigentlich meine ich „erwerben“.In the title of the episode I speak of learning, as this verb is more common (because this verb is used more often). But actually I mean “acquire”.

Man kann absolut keine Schritte überspringen, wenn man eine Sprache erwirbt. Mit Erwerben meine ich, dass man die Sprache unbewusst lernt, indem man viel hört und liest.You absolutely cannot skip any steps when you acquire a language. With acquisitions, I mean that you are unconsciously learning the language by listening and reading much.

Es gibt eine natürliche Reihenfolge, wie wir Sprachen erwerben. Die Reihenfolge ist von der Natur vorgegeben! Dies ist die Hypothese von der natürlichen Reihenfolge, die „natural order hypothesis“.There is a natural order in which we acquire languages. The order is given by nature! This is the natural order hypothesis.

Leider wurde die Reihenfolge beim Erwerben der deutschen Sprache nicht so sehr erforscht wie bei der englischen Sprache.Unfortunately, the order when acquiring the German language is not studied as much as the English language.

Kinder, die Englisch als Muttersprache erwerben, benutzen bestimmte sogenannte Morpheme früher als andere Morpheme. Sie erwerben die ing-Form („He is playing baseball.“) und das Plural-S („two dogs“) zum Beispiel sehr früh.Children who acquire English as a native language, use certain so-called morphemes earlier than other morphemes. They acquire the ing form (“He is playing baseball.”) and the plural-s ( “two dogs”) very early, for example.

Das S am Ende des Verbs bei der dritten Person Singular („He lives in New York.“) und das Possessiv-S („John’s hat“) werden erst sehr viel später erworben.The s at the end of the verb in the third person singular ( “He lives in New York.”) and the possessive s (“John’s hat”) will only be acquired much later.

Auch bei der deutschen Sprache wurde eine natürliche Reihenfolge beim Erwerben der Sprache nachgewiesen. Das Heidelberg-Projekt war eine Studie von Gastarbeitern aus Spanien und Italien in Deutschland.In the German language as well, a natural sequence for acquiring the language was found. The Heidelberg Project was a study of immigrant workers from Spain and Italy in Germany.

Durch ihren Kontakt mit Deutschen während der Freizeit und auf der Arbeit erwarben sie effektiv die deutsche Sprache.Through their contact with Germans during leisure time and at work they acquired the German language effectively.

Die Forscher machten ein paar interessante Entdeckungen:The researchers made some interesting discoveries:

Zum Beispiel ließen Anfänger manchmal das Verb aus: „Ich Ingenieur.“ statt „Ich bin ein Ingenieur.“For example, sometimes beginners left out the verb: “I engineer.” instead of “I am an engineer.”

Sie benutzten häufig das Wort „viel“, zum Beispiel „viel Komplikation“ statt „schwere Komplikationen“ oder „große Probleme“.They often used the word “much”, such as “much complication” instead of “serious complications” or “big problems”.

Sie hatten alternative Ausdrucksweisen einfach noch nicht erworben.They simply had not acquired alternative expressions yet.

Warum rede ich darüber? Warum ist dieses Thema wichtig?Why am I talking about this? Why is this topic important?

Nun, ich möchte nicht, dass du dich zu sehr ärgerst, wenn du bestimmte grammatische Regeln noch nicht erworben hast.Well, I don’t want you to be too angry with yourself, if you have not yet acquired certain grammatical rules.

Du kannst dich nicht dazu zwingen, eine bestimmte Regel zu erwerben. Du kannst sie höchstens aktiv auswendig lernen, aber dann denkst du vielleicht nicht an die Regel, wenn du nicht viel Zeit zum Überlegen hast.You cannot force yourself to acquire a particular rule. You can at best learn it actively by heart, but then you might not think of the rule when you do not have much time to think.

Irgendwann wirst du auch diese Regel erwerben und dann kommt dir die korrekte deutsche Ausdrucksweise automatisch in den Sinn.At some point you will acquire this rule as well, and then the correct German expression comes to your mind automatically.

Vielleicht musst du vorher andere Regeln erwerben und es nützt nichts, sich grundlos zu ärgern. Immer, wenn du dich der Sprache aussetzt und das meiste verstehst, machst du Fortschritte.Maybe you need to acquire other rules beforehand and it’s no use getting angry for no reason. Whenever you’re exposed to the language and understand most of it, you’re making progress.
